Description

The Chadar Trek is one of the most thrilling and unique treks in India, located in the remote and rugged region of Ladakh. This trek takes adventurers along the frozen Zanskar River, which turns into a natural ice sheet during the winter months, creating the "Chadar" (meaning blanket in Hindi) that gives the trek its name.

Itinerary

Touching down in Leh feels like stepping into the sky itself. You’ve just crossed the Himalayas, the jagged peaks sliding away beneath the plane like jagged teeth, and now the valley unfolds in stillness that almost hums. The chill air greets you like an old friend, whispering, “Get ready.” We meet you at the tiny airport and drive you to our favorite boutique guesthouse, where soft beds, glowing stoves, and that legendary Ladakhi warmth instantly push the chill away.

After you settle, we let you wander the little side streets, the vibrant market, or visit the ancient Leh Palace. Sip hot butter tea between bites of momos and fragrant barley while the sun slides down the sky and paints the peaks gold and pink. The altitude is gentle today, and moving slowly is part of the plan.

Later, we gather for an easy-going briefing over more tea and delicious snacks. We outline what’s coming, from glacier-blue camp-lakes to gourmet meals on ice, and what you’ll need to stay comfy and safe at 3,500 meters. When the night finally enfolds you, rest deeply; tomorrow the adventure—and altitude—really begins.

Top Moments of the Day:

  1. 1. A stunning flight above the Himalayas under winter skies
    2. A boutique guesthouse where every corner feels like a warm hug
    3. Strolling Leh Market and peeking into Leh Palace
    4. Warm welcome, then a get-ready briefing for the trek ahead

Today is all about letting your body adjust to the altitude before we head higher. We kick things off with a hearty breakfast that fuels muscles and warms you from the inside. You can then climb to Shanti Stupa for a 360-degree view of Leh glowing in the winter sun, or wander through the old market where colorful prayer flags dance above artisan stalls.

Our guides sprinkle Ladakhi stories, folk tales, and bits of history into the air, helping you feel the heartbeat of this place. Around lunchtime you can kick back, sip water, or double-check your gear for the trek.

As the sun starts to dip, we meet again for the evening briefing. You’ll hear about the surprises and the breathtaking beauty that lie ahead on the frozen Zanskar River, setting the stage for tomorrow’s adventures.

Key Highlights of the Day:

  1. 1. Easy walks around Shanti Stupa and the best spots in Leh

2. Ladakhi stories straight from the heart

3. Hands-on tips for your gear from the pros

4. A gentle day for getting used to the altitude

Today is a big step: the medical check-up. You’ll head to a health center in Leh for a few simple tests—blood pressure, oxygen levels, a quick ECG—required for your safety and for the permits we need.

Once you get the all-clear, we grab the permits, insurance papers, and any other formal stuff we need. The rest of the day is yours—wander the market, enjoy a cup of sweet chai, or give your gear one last look. This relaxed day lets you finish getting your head and body ready with the whole Himalaya sky hanging overhead.

When the sun starts to go down, we’ll meet up again to make sure everyone has what they need and feels ready to take those first steps on the Chadar tomorrow.

Today’s Quick Wrap-Up:

  1. 1. Health checks done and dusted, permits in hand.
  2. 2. All permits shining and signed.
  3. 3. Chill time to tune up your gear and catch your breath.
  4. 4. Thoughts and inspiration as we gear up for Day 4.

Today’s light wakes you up and guides the ride from Leh to the trailhead. For 2 to 3 hours, the road glides past Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Magnetic Hill, and the point where the Indus and Zanskar rivers meet. The views slowly swap calm earth for something that feels like outer space.

Keep your camera ready: the moment you arrive at Shingra Koma and step onto the Zanskar, you’re inside a river that’s turned to glass. Guides show you the Penguin Walk, a goofy name for the clever way to cross ice without sliding. The trail we take is flat and purposeful, but every step is packed with excitement.

Tonight’s camp is a riverbank glittering with stars. Ice cliffs and stone walls hug the tents like a giant hug. Dinner is the kind of good meal you’d crave after a long day, and the quiet of the river tucks you in for the deepest sleep you’ll remember.

Day’s Best Bits:

  1. 1. Cool ride past Chilling, Magnetic Hill, and the slim Pathar Sahib

2. First footfalls on the Zanskar’s ice—mastering the Penguin shuffle

3. Camp snug under giant Himalayan walls and glittering river ice

The dawn chills the air as you wrap frozen fingers around steamy tea, steam drifting across the ice. Today’s walk spans 6–7 hours and about 14 km of river flat, no creature comforts. Ridged walls soar beside you, turning every step into a wide-screen movie of quiet and height.

Frozen waterfalls hang from the cliffs like giant glass beads—some break loose, tinkling down even the minus temps. Mid-route the group drops for a lunch stop—maybe under a low roof of stone, on a slanted ledge, anywhere the wind needles a little less. The air tastes sharp and honest.

Sun’s low, the river’s quiet, and you side-eye the incoming Tibb Cave. The rock mouth yawns, wind swerves, and inside the stone hugs you like an old friend. Dinner’s steaming, every potato slice feels like a medal, and the long-reflective crackle of the fire whispers about the change that’s happening inside each of you on the Chadar trek.

Highlights of the Day:

  1. 1. Walk through canyons shaped by glacier rivers and ice falls

2. Wilderness lunch spots under towering cliffs and fresh snow

3. Sleep in Tibb Cave: old stories, a soft place, and wild sunset views

Today, you climb in both your spirit and the world’s height. The hike lasts 12 km (5 to 7 hours), winding up through giddy gorges and shifting crusts of snow. Bright flags waving from gnarled bushes tell you Nerak is close.

In front of you, the waterfall hangs like a giant, frozen veil, glowing in blues and crystal sparkles. A shaky log bridge lets you step out and hover above the scene, a tiny dot beside roaring ice, feeling both small and proud. From here, we pitch the tents about 200 feet above the river, a perfect perch for mountains and deep quiet.

Nights here test the limits—the thermometer sometimes drops to –25°C or colder. But in your four-season tent, heat wraps you like a hug, and the day’s pictures play in your mind like a never-ending movie.

Key Highlights of the Day:

  1. 1. Hike to the famous Nerak Frozen Waterfall

2. Cross the sway-top wooden bridge—so quiet and almost eerie

3. Camp next to the waterfall; the coldest night yet

The way back feels more like poetry than repetition. Same track, but fresh eyes. The Chadar shifts and cracks beneath us—pinholes, new sculptures, surprises greeting every step. A church-bell-like crack, the ice saying it's still alive, keeps the air electric.

Whether it’s a small knot of villagers boiling tea or a monk with a calm smile, each soul we meet stitches warmth into the frozen hush. By late afternoon, Tibb Cave comes back into view, a friend you recognize but forgot the voice of.

Dinner feels like a safe blanket—piping-hot stew, easy chatter, and the quieter talk of minds still tasting the trek’s turning story.

Key Highlights of the Day:

  1. 1. Fresh patterns frozen into the Chadar with every footfall

2. Brief moments with villagers and monks, alive in the cold

3. Arriving again at Tibb Cave: quiet smiles and soft beds

The valley wakes under dawn’s light, and we lace up for the last push—12 to 15 km scanning the lumpy ice toward Shingra Koma. Paw prints—ibex, a quick fox, even the hint of a snow leopard—run parallel to us, quiet invitations from the wild.

Once you hop off the ice, a cozy drive whisks you back to Leh, where the heat, laughter, and little luxury perks are ready to wrap you up. The evening practically throws a party for you—think hot showers, a fancy dinner, and the happy glow of having done something spectacular together.

Beneath the twinkling Himalayan night, you stretch the day—forging memories that linger long after the final farewell.

Today’s Best Moments:

  1. 1. One last glide across Chadar, a few animal tracks still kissing the ice, and then—hello, soft beds and hot tea.

2. A farewell dinner, where stories of the Chadar river loop, ice caves, and each little victory are passed around the table.

After a final feast that’s more than oatmeal and jam, and after hugs that last a little too long, you tuck yourself onto the plane carrying something weightier than a stack of Instagram photos. You’ve got a story for the future. The frozen river, the quiet gorges, the cliffs hanging with icicles: they’ve moved from the earth to your bones, proof of a luxury adventure carved right in the middle of nature’s wild-hearted extremes.
